Public Workshop: Reimagine Coralville's Southeast Commercial District
Thursday, May 24, 2018
The public is invited to a community engagement workshop to gather feedback about Coralville’s Southeast Commercial District. The Southeast Commercial District is roughly bordered by Clear Creek, the Iowa Interstate Railroad, and 1st Avenue, and serves as a gateway into Coralville from Iowa City and the University of Iowa.
This workshop is intended to gather ideas to help reimagine the Southeast Commercial District as part of a planning project. The Southeast Commercial District was originally identified in the 2014 Community Plan as an area that needed additional study and attention. Public feedback will help identify key themes and priorities for redevelopment in the district. Participants will be asked to share what they perceive as the opportunities and challenges, as well as their future vision, for this area.
The City of Coralville is partnering with Kansas State University Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) and Kansas State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning (LARCP) in the summer of 2018. Over 20 graduate students are participating in a land use planning project, culminating in a series of research-driven maps and urban design proposals for the Southeast Commercial District. The intent of the partnership is to generate a set of strategic urban design ideas for the future of Coralville’s Southeast Commercial District. Coralville stakeholders, leaders, and decision-makers will receive fresh ideas for community planning, and students will gain “real world” experience engaging with project partners and community members on a service learning project.
An open house will be held on July 11 for the public to view the graduate students’ concepts for the Southeast Commercial District.
