On Monday morning, March 19, construction will get underway on 1st Avenue from 6th Street to 9th Street.  The initial phase of construction, Phase 1, will install temporary pavement along the east side of 1st Avenue and this will require northbound 1st Avenue to be reduced to one lane from just south of 6th Street to just south of 9th Street.  Southbound 1st Avenue will remain two lanes. Phase 1 should take 18 working days or until April 12th to complete, weather permitting.

Following the completion of Phase 1, traffic control will be setup for Phase 2 – Stage 1.  During this stage, 6th Street will be closed to traffic between 1st Avenue and the driveway to the Baymont Inn & Suites.  A press release will be issued ahead of the 6th Street closure.

Access to businesses along 1st Avenue will be maintained for the duration of the 1st Avenue construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained along 1st Avenue through temporary surfacing and channelizing barriers.  Drivers should expect delays and please drive carefully in work zones! Coralville Transit riders may experience delays on all routes, especially during peak traffic times. Any changes to bus routes and schedules will be posted on www.coralville.org/transit.

The 1st Avenue improvements will be substantially complete this December and will feature:

  • Four through lanes and a continuous center turn lane
  • 10 foot wide sidewalks on both sides of 1st Avenue
  • Upgraded traffic signals at the E. 7th Street intersection
  • New four-leg intersection with traffic signals at 6th Street, with the fourth leg providing a future connection to E. 2nd Avenue in the Iowa River Landing
  • New public utilities (storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main)
  • New roadway lighting and streetscaping
