Public Exhibition & Open House: Reimagine Coralville's Southeast Commercial District
Wednesday, July 11, 2018
The public is invited to an exhibition and open house to view graduate students’ concepts for Coralville's Southeast Commercial District. This event will be held at Reunion Brewery. The graduate students will present seven visionary ideas for the future of the District. The Southeast Commercial District is roughly bordered by Clear Creek, the Iowa Interstate Railroad, and 1st Avenue, and serves as a gateway into Coralville from Iowa City and the University of Iowa.
The exhibition and open house is a follow-up to a community engagement workshop held in May 2018 to gather feedback and help reimagine Coralville’s Southeast Commercial District as part of a planning project. The Southeast Commercial District was originally identified in the 2014 Community Plan as an area that needed additional study and attention.
The City of Coralville is partnering with Kansas State University Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) and Kansas State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning (LARCP) in the summer of 2018. Over 20 graduate students are participating in a land use planning project, culminating in a series of research-driven maps and urban design proposals for the Southeast Commercial District. The intent of the partnership is to generate a set of strategic urban design ideas for the future of Coralville’s Southeast Commercial District. Coralville stakeholders, leaders, and decision-makers will receive fresh ideas for community planning, and students will gain “real world” experience engaging with project partners and community members on a service learning project.
