Duty to Report

It is the duty of the owner of any animal which has bitten or attacked a person, or the duty of someone with knowledge of an animal bite or attack, to report it to local law enforcement or a public health official. (Coralville City Ordinance Ch. 55.17).

Mandatory Isolation & Quarantine

Any animal that has bitten or caused a skin abrasion on someone is required to be placed in isolation and quarantine for a minimum of ten days for observation as follows:
  • If the owner resides in Coralville, and if the animal is properly licensed and is currently vaccinated against rabies, it may be placed in the owner's custody on their premises during the isolation and quarantine period under the direction of Animal Control.
  • If the animal is not properly licensed or does not have proof of a current rabies vaccination, it is isolated / quarantined at the Iowa City Animal Shelter or a veterinary hospital at the owner's expense.
