[ARCHIVED] 1st Avenue & I-80 Interchange Project Update

This update for the 1st Avenue and I-80 Interchange Project includes information related to the Iowa Girls High School Volleyball State Tournament to be held October 31 through November 3, 2022, at Xtream Arena in the Iowa River Landing.

  • To help with traffic flow during the volleyball tournament, there will be no lane closures on 1st Avenue or the interchange ramps the week of October 31. Lane closures within the interchange project will resume on Monday morning, November 7, as crews work to complete temporary pavement widening before Thanksgiving.
  • The 1st Avenue Trail crossing over I-80 will re-open on Friday evening, October 28, and remain open through the volleyball tournament. The trail crossing will close again from Monday morning, November 7, through Friday evening, November 11.
  • UI CAMBUS will continue serving the temporary bus stop location on southbound 1st Avenue at Russell Slade Boulevard until Friday evening, November 11. The bus makes its first stop south of I-80 at E. 9th Street.
  • Monday and Tuesday, October 31 and November 1, are expected to be the busiest days for volleyball tournament traffic, with Monday matches underway from noon through 7:30 pm and Tuesday matches underway from 10:00 am through 9:30 pm.
  • Drivers should expect traffic congestion on 1st Avenue during the tournament and consider alternate routes (12th Avenue; Coral Ridge Avenue) during the late afternoon peak traffic time from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
  • For more information about the volleyball tournament, visit 2022 State Volleyball Tournament Central.
