The City of Coralville has scheduled earth-friendly events in May for making the most of household items and safe disposal of personal documents, along with a free extra trash collection and Mayor’s Clean Up Week.

City Wide Garage Sale
Saturday, May 6, 8:00 am to noon
Starting at 8:00 am on May 6, stop by the Recreation Center at 1506 8th Street to pick up a map of participating sales throughout Coralville.  Pastries and juice will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis.  To be included in the city sale listing, call the Coralville Recreation Center by April 30.  Call 319.248.1750 for more information.

Community Shred Event
Saturday, May 6, 9:00 am to 11:00 am
Coralville residents can bring up to two boxes of personal papers to the Coralville Community Aquatic Center parking lot at 1513 7th Street (next to the City Hall lot) to be shredded on site for free by Heartland Shredding, in partnership with the Coralville Police Department.

Any type of paper, paper clips, staples, rubber bands, labels, and file tabs can be put into the security containers, and residents can watch the shredding process through a monitor on the mobile shredding truck.   After these confidential and sensitive documents are shredded, 100% of the shredded material will be taken to recycling centers and recycled into usable products including napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, dispenser towels, facial tissue, and notebook paper.  Call 319.248.1800 for more information.

Cart a la Carte:  Free Extra Trash Cart Collection

May 5 and May 8

City of Coralville trash customers will receive one additional free trash cart collection.  Place any trash or smaller items in the cart on the designated day, and set your cart at the curb.  This collection is in addition to the regular collection for that week.  One additional tagged bag on top of the closed lid of the cart is allowed and will be picked up.  Tagged bags on the ground will not be picked up.  The free extra collection will occur:

  • Friday, May 5, for homes with regular trash collection on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday
  • Monday, May 8, for homes with regular trash collection on Thursday

This extra collection is to empty trash carts only. Recycling, yard waste, and trash collections will still occur on your regular collection.  Call the Streets and Solid Waste Department at 319.248.1740 for more information.

Recycle Swap Day
Saturday, May 13, 8:00 am to noon
This free, earth-friendly event in the City Hall parking lot at 1512 7th Street keeps items out of the landfill.  Donate clean, usable items or take items donated by others.  The event is free and treasure hunters are welcome, regardless of donations.  The following items are accepted:  furniture, appliances, household items, books, clothing, or toys.

Items left at the end of the day will be donated to non-profit organizations.  Take advantage of this community opportunity to reduce, reuse, and recycle by giving a new home to unwanted items.  Call 319.248.1720 for more information or to volunteer.

Seeds & Plants Swap

Saturday, May 13, 8:00 am to 11:45 am

The Coralville Public Library will host a "seed swap" table at Recycle Swap Day outside Coralville City Hall. Bring any plants or unused seeds you'd like to exchange, or pick up free seeds or plants -- you don't need to bring a plant or seeds to take something home. Leftovers will go the to the Coralville Public Library's seed library.  For more information, contact Kayla Cook, Library Assistant, at kcook@coralville.org or call the Coralville Public Library at 319.248.1850.

Mayor's Spring Clean-Up Week

May 15-19

During Mayor's Clean-Up Week in Coralville, dispose of bulky items too big to fit in your trash cart (such as furniture or bathroom fixtures) that have reached the end of their useful life.  Place items curbside up to 24 hours before, or by 7:00 am on your regular trash collection day.

This service is available to Coralville residents with City trash and recycling services.  Do not leave your garbage at other people's curbs.  If someone helps themselves to your curbside items and leaves a mess behind, you are responsible for cleaning it up.

Items must be able to be reasonably lifted by two people, and must fit in the garbage truck; dismantle large items.  Appliances, construction materials, electronics, pallets, wooden swing sets, tires, hot tubs, railroad ties, concrete brick or block, or hazardous materials will not be accepted.

Metal will be picked up by a separate truck to be recycled; metal pickup may not occur on your regular collection day.  Appliances, electronics, and tires can be picked up separately by appointment throughout the year.

This is a free event for bulky items; all garbage bags and yard waste must be tagged as usual.

Any items not collected should be removed from the curb within 24 hours after collection day.

For more information, please call 319.248.1740 or visit www.coralville.org/cleanup.

Mayor's Clean Up Week is for items that need to be thrown away and cannot be reused. Do not send usable items to the landfill.  Consider donating usable items to Recycle Swap Day, Habitat ReStore, Goodwill, or Houses into Homes.
