[ARCHIVED] Sanitary Sewer Line Cleaning & Preventative Maintenance in October

The City of Coralville has contracted with CIT Sewer Solutions to clean and televise the sanitary sewers throughout the month of October.

Impacted Area
The targeted area is bordered by 4th Avenue on the east and 14th Avenue on the west, and bordered by I-80 on the north and south to 2nd Street. Other nonspecific areas that have a history of blockages will be cleaned only.

Why Clean Sanitary Sewers
The cleaning and televising is performed as a preventative maintenance measure and to determine the overall condition of the sanitary sewer. There is also a regulatory requirement in the City’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to maintain the system in good working order and to prevent sanitary sewer overflows (SSO).

Cleaning the sanitary sewers helps to remove materials in the pipes such as grease, tree roots, and debris. It also helps remove other material that doesn't belong in the sewer, such as disposable wipes. Televising sanitary sewer lines involves proactively using a remote camera to inspect the sewer lines.

What You Can Expect
A large high pressure truck will be used to clean the sanitary sewers. Some homes and businesses may be affected by the high cleaning pressure. This high pressure can force air back through the home’s service line and spray a small volume water out of floor drains and toilets. As a precaution, it is recommended to cover floor drains and toilets with a towel to absorb any water. It also helps to place a heavy object on the towel to prevent any movement. In the event any water does escape, CIT Sewer Solutions will assist with cleanup. When the cleaning crew has left your area, please pour water down all drains.

  • October 11: 14th Ave.
  • October 13: 11th Ave., 10th Ave.
